Iran Appoints New Commander for Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps

Iran appointed Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi as the new commander-in-chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, a move that places at the head of the force a military man who is a "fugitive from Argentine justice" for his role in the 1994 AMIA terrorist attack.

The appointment, reported by the Iranian Mehr agency, comes in a context of forced vacancy following the death of the previous chief, General Mohamad Pakpur, who died during recent US and Israeli attacks on Iranian territory.

Vahidi, who has held significant positions in the past, is one of the main accused in the bombing of the Jewish mutual in Buenos Aires and has active international arrest warrants.

The restructuring of military command arises as an immediate response to the loss of the top figures of power in Tehran, according to the Argentine News Agency.

The Israeli army bombed strategic targets in the heart of Tehran.

In addition to the confirmation of the death of its supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the regime confirmed that in the air raids, the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, Major General Abdorrahim Musavi; the Minister of Defense, Brigadier General Aziz Nasirzadeh; and the Secretary of the Defense Council, Ali Shamkhani, were killed.

In this scenario of institutional crisis, Vahidi's appointment reaffirms the hard line of the military body, despite the red alerts that weigh on his figure for international terrorism crimes.
