
According to Iranian media, on Monday the pre-trial detention of Mahdi Karoubi, the opposition leader who had been held for 14 years for protesting the results of presidential elections, will be lifted.
Karoubi became well known for his participation in mass protests in 2009, demanding a re-examination of the election results, which he believed were fraudulent. He was one of the candidates for the presidency in 2009 and served as the fifth president of the Medicin from 1981 to 1989.
"I believe that my past beliefs, expressed by me and others, were not forgiven, but I am ready to go for freedom without a hitch and in the last stage of my life experience the colossal influence that can have on active and political events," Karoubi stated after the announcement of his release.
