The winner of the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize, Narges Mohammadi, was sentenced by an Iranian court to six years in prison, her lawyer confirmed. "She was sentenced to six years in prison for association and collusion to commit crimes," Mostafa Nili told AFP, adding that she was also banned from leaving the country for two years. According to the Argentine News Agency, Mohammadi was also sentenced to a year and a half in prison for propaganda activities and will be exiled for two years to the city of Jowsh, in the eastern province of South Khorasan. Under Iranian law, prison sentences are served simultaneously. The lawyer noted that Mohammadi has health problems and, given the situation, hopes she can be temporarily released on bail to receive treatment. Nili clarified that the verdict is not final and can be appealed. The 53-year-old Mohammadi had been tried and imprisoned on several occasions for her campaign against the death penalty in Iran and the mandatory dress code for women. In this sense, she spent most of the last decade in prison and has not seen her children, who live in Paris, since 2015. Mohammadi had been released in December 2024 for three weeks due to health problems, as "a tumor and a bone graft were removed from her," her lawyer explained. During one of her periods of detention, the Iranian human rights activist won the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize, mainly for her campaign against the death penalty in her country. However, being in prison, she was unable to attend the award ceremony, and her children received the award on her behalf.
