Zarif Resigns as Vice President Amid Economic Challenges

Mohammad Javad Zarif resigned 10 days after being appointed as head of the Board of Directors responsible for selecting members of the new Iranian Administration's cabinet, citing his dissatisfaction with the results of his work. He subsequently retracted his resignation after mediation and prudent consultations. However, Iranian lawmakers challenged the Minister of Economic Affairs and Finance, Abdolnaser Hemmati, voting in favor of his dismissal due to the country's economic issues, such as high inflation and depreciation of the national currency.

In a post on social media X, Zarif stated that he met with the head of the Judiciary of Iran on Sunday and that he had accepted the recommendation to return to university. He expressed his desire that by stepping down, excuses that could hinder the success of the Iranian Administration would be eliminated. Masoud Pezeshkian, president of Iran, received Zarif's resignation letter on Sunday night but has not yet responded.

According to the official news agency IRNA, Zarif had been illegally appointed as vice president, as two of his children hold U.S. citizenship, which violates Iranian legislation regarding relevant positions. Lawmakers had been monitoring his appointment since the beginning of the Administration's term. Last August, Pezeshkian appointed Zarif, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, as Vice President for Strategic Affairs and Director of the Strategic Studies Center.

The Vice President of Iran, Mohammad Javad Zarif, resigned for the second time since his appointment last August.
