The Iranian opposition group 'Mojahedin-e Khalq' confirmed on Thursday that Mojtaba Khamenei has been appointed as the Supreme Leader following the assassination of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In a statement released by the organization, it said that this move is 'a clear indication of the regime's deep crisis and its desperate attempt to cling to power.' 'Mojahedin-e Khalq' stated that 'the Iranian people will not recognize this illegitimate successor and will continue their struggle to overthrow the theocratic regime.'
The group called on the international community not to recognize Iran's new leadership and to increase pressure on the regime in Tehran. 'Appointing Mojtaba Khamenei is an act of desperation by the regime, which understands that its days are numbered,' the statement read. 'We call on all democratic forces in the world to support the Iranian people in their fight for freedom.'
