Iran Appoints Third Member of Interim Leadership Council

Buenos Aires, March 1 (NA) – Ayatollah Alireza Arafi, 66, was appointed this Sunday as the third member of the interim council that will lead Iran following the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, according to the Assembly of the System's Expediency Discernment Council. The Iranian regime appointed the religious figure to join this provisional body, which will 'lead the country until the Assembly of Experts, composed of 88 clerics, designates a new leader.' Arafi, who serves as a jurist on the Guardian Council, assumes this responsibility alongside Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and the head of the judiciary, Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei. Iran appointed an individual accused of the AMIA bombing to head the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The formation of this triumvirate, as learned by the Argentine News Agency, aims to guarantee institutional stability in a scenario of a power vacuum after the death of the country's highest authority. While this council exercises command functions, the burden of the definitive succession will fall on the Assembly of Experts, the collegiate body with the legal power to determine who will hold the position permanently. Arafi's appointment thus completes the structure of the interim leadership that will have to navigate the political crisis in Tehran.
