The President of Iran, Masud Pezeshkian, expressed his confidence in the imminent signing of a comprehensive agreement with Russia during his meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the BRICS summit, of which both countries are members. Pezeshkian personally committed to taking charge of advancing the agreement and showed willingness to resolve any issues that arise in the process.
During the meeting, the Iranian leader highlighted the potential for constructive interaction between Tehran and Moscow within the BRICS framework. He thanked Russia for supporting Iran's integration as a permanent member of the group and for backing Tehran's entry into the Eurasian Economic Union and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).
Putin, for his part, assured that the parties would soon be able to consolidate the results obtained with the "important" agreement on a comprehensive strategic partnership between Russia and Iran. Both leaders agreed on the importance of establishing strong partnerships to counter the unilateralism and totalitarianism present in some international powers.
At Mehrabad Airport in Tehran, Pezeshkian stated: "I believe that these types of partnerships can be a way out of the totalitarianism of the United States and can overshadow the unilateralism that continues to impose sanctions against any government it wishes." This is Iran's first participation in the BRICS summit as a full member, following the formalization of its accession to the group in January 2024.
Emphasizing the shared desire to establish a just multipolar world order and adhere to international norms, President Putin stated: "We are united by the desire to form a just multipolar world order, comply with international norms, and preserve the central role of the UN." This meeting between Russia and Iran follows a previous encounter in Turkmenistan less than a month ago.
President Pezeshkian, before heading to Kazan, underlined BRICS's intention to combat the totalitarianism exercised by the United States. The meeting between Russia and Iran was an opportunity to consolidate the relationship between the two nations and advance a comprehensive strategic agreement that strengthens their cooperation in various areas.
