A court in Tehran has sentenced Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi to an additional six months in prison, along with four other prisoners, for protesting in prison against the execution of an inmate. This is the seventh sentence against the activist since 2021.
Narges Mohammadi's family reported that the new sentence was in response to the peaceful protest she conducted against the execution of Reza Rasai inside Evin prison. The sentence also affected Pakhshan Azizi, Varishe Moradi, Mahbubeh Rezai, and Parivash Moslemi, who were sentenced to an additional six months in prison, except for Moslemi, who has three months and one additional day added to her sentence.
These women were found guilty of "resisting orders" during a protest in prison on August 6 against the execution of Rasai, who was accused of being involved in the murder of an intelligence agent during the protests following the death of Mahsa Amini in September 2022.
During the demonstration at Evin, Narges Mohammadi was hit in the chest and fainted, according to her family’s reports. Recently, she has been denied medical treatment and authorization to transfer her to a hospital several times for tests due to cardiac issues and a lump in her right chest.
Despite having been sentenced seven times since 2021 to a total of 13 years and nine months in prison, as well as 154 lashes, Narges Mohammadi continues to denounce human rights violations in Iran, including the death penalty and violence against women who do not wear the Islamic veil.
The activist was awarded the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her defense of human rights and freedom for all.
