Iran Confirms Death of Militia Commander

Iran's Revolutionary Guard confirmed on Tuesday the death of Gholamreza Soleimani, commander of the paramilitary Basij militia, in airstrikes, according to official agencies. The Israeli Army had earlier announced Soleimani's death in a 'precise strike' in Tehran. The Revolutionary Guard stated he died in a 'terrorist attack' and praised his 'strategic and unparalleled' role within the Basij. It also assured that the militia will not cease its fight. Israel claims that under Soleimani's command, the Basij led major repression operations against protesters in January, using 'extreme violence and mass arrests'. The nighttime attacks in Tehran also killed Ali Lariyani, Secretary of Iran's National Security Council, though Iran has not yet confirmed this death.
