Iran restricts global internet access amid protests

Tehran, Jan 8 (EFE).- Iranian authorities restricted access to the global internet on Thursday, not allowing connections or services from outside the country, in what appears to be an attempt to control protests that have shaken Iran for 12 days. NetBlocks, a platform that monitors internet traffic and censorship, stated on X that metrics show Iran is experiencing a 'national' internet blackout. It added that the incident comes after 'a series of digital censorship measures' taken against protests across the country, which 'obstruct' the right to communicate at a 'critical' moment. EFE was able to confirm that from the early afternoon, it became impossible to connect to websites outside Iran, and virtual private networks (VPNs) typically used to access apps blocked in the country, such as WhatsApp or Telegram, were not working.
