Water reserves in the four dams supplying Mashhad, Iran's second-largest city, have fallen to less than 3%, local media reported on Sunday. Hussein Esmailian, head of the water authority in Mashhad, told the ISNA news agency that the water reserves have 'dropped to less than 3%' in the city's dams, which serve a population of four million. Earlier this week, authorities estimated the water reserves in Mashhad's dams at 40 million cubic meters, compared to 189 million in the same period last year. In Tehran, one of the five dams has completely dried up, while the reserves in another have fallen below 8%, according to authorities. Media reports also indicate that 15 out of Iran's 31 provinces have not received a single drop of rain this autumn.
