IAEA Cannot Verify Iran's Uranium Enrichment Suspension

The IAEA has been unable to verify if Iran has halted all uranium enrichment due to lack of access to facilities. The agency warned of the need to clarify the status of all nuclear materials at damaged sites.

IAEA Cannot Verify Iran's Uranium Enrichment Suspension

A UN report seen by the Associated Press states that the UN agency has been unable to verify whether Iran has frozen all uranium enrichment activities. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) report emphasized that for this reason, 'the agency cannot verify whether Iran has suspended all enrichment activities' or verify 'the size of Iran's uranium stockpile at the damaged nuclear facilities.' The IAEA reported that through analysis of satellite imagery, it observed 'regular activity of vehicles around the entrance to the underground complex in Isfahan.' The agency's Friday report warned that due to the inability to access Iran's declared uranium enrichment facilities, 'the agency cannot provide any information on the current size, composition, or location of Iran's enriched uranium stockpile.' The report stressed that 'there is an urgent need to address the continuous lack of knowledge about all nuclear materials previously declared at the damaged facilities in Iran.' According to the IAEA, Iran holds a stockpile of 444.9 kg of enriched uranium with a purity of up to 60%, and there is only a short technical step between this level and the 90% level used in weapon-making. IAEA guidelines state that such highly enriched nuclear materials should normally be verified monthly.
